I’m an artist and filmmaker. I began as a visiting student at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing. From there, I went to the Ruskin School of Art at Oxford University, and later pursued a master’s in Film Studies at Goldsmiths.
I make art because it’s the way I’ve come to engage and make sense of the world. I think it helps us illuminate, scrutinise, and imagine alternatives to some of our most hidden assumptions and values, but in a way that respects the ambiguity of meaning and resists fixation. It’s a practice that asks us to examine our patterns of thought as equally as our sensations and feelings, and to find other ways of seeing and being.
I was attracted by the moving image perhaps by the way it reflected on the passage of time. It led me to photography, time-based installations, other forms of mark-making, and eventually back to film. Currently, I’m working on a feature documentary centred on a martial arts boarding school in Dengfeng, China, alongside other ongoing projects.
